Now, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor is looking to make the downtown riverwalk bigger and better.
Castor wants to connect the riverwalk in Channelside through Sparkman Wharf to the cruise port terminal.
The booming downtown area has more residents now than in recent years and even more tourists.
Still, there are concerns with annexing that section of waterfront to the riverwalk.
During a meeting Tuesday, Castor and Port of Tampa officials discussed the possibility of opening that section of the walkway to The Florida Aquarium and around to the channel district.
The area is around terminal two, a terminal that is only used 30 days out of the year the by cruise ships.
Castor said she wants to create a commission involving several different groups including the cruise lines, the riverwalk board and others.
So far, there’s no dollar amount attached to the proposal. Castor said she’d like to have some answers in the near future.
