LAKELAND, Fla. — A 34-year-old woman is now facing charges for improperly disposing of a body after a baby was found dead in a dumpster last week in Lakeland.
According to the medical examiner's office, the full-term infant was stillborn and never took its first breath.
The report also shows the baby had a severe brain deformity.
The baby boy's body was found in a dumpster behind businesses in the 3600 block of south Florida Avenue.
Following the discovery, Lakeland police said Brusela D'Enstachio-Lugo came to them and told detectives she did not know she was pregnant and gave birth a day before the infant's body was discovered. She said she only had minor symptoms and believed she was just getting sick.
Officials said she told investigators she was afraid to go to the hospital afterward because she was in the country illegally and did not want to get in trouble. She also said she did not have any money to pay the medical expenses.
D'Enstachio-Lugo admitted putting the infant's remains in the dumpster later that evening after giving birth, according to the arrest report.
Investigators said the initial results do not indicate homicide or foul play in the baby's death. The woman faces a misdemeanor charge of storage, preservation, and transportation of human remains.
The Department of Homeland Security is now involved as well because of her immigration status.
