PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Pinellas County resident Mateo Smith has a special dislike for litter. So much so that he came up with a superhero-style way of fighting against litter. He dresses up in a wolf head outfit and calls himself the “Trash Wolf.”

Smith said he got interested in the issue of litter because he has friends in the public transit business. That’s when he started to take notice of bus stop shelters. They were often hot spots for litter.

He ordered his wolf head from a man in Ukraine. It took months for it to arrive because of the war with Russia.

In real life, Smith is a mild-mannered beverage salesman at businesses like hotels. But since he travels for his job, he can’t help but notice the litter everywhere.

“I see the crime being committed. I’m just not going to stand for it,” said Smith while he was driving. “I can’t just drive by the crime. I have to do something.”

Smith pulled his car over to a convenience store on Ulmerton Road and changed into a litter crime-fighting outfit. He started picking up litter with a trash grabber device and put it into a rolling trash bin.

“It’s all of our responsibility to take care of it. It angers me we just let it go like this,” said Smith. “It doesn’t take long for all of this to add up. It just doesn’t look good.”

Even though Smith is really annoyed by litter, he says he actually has a great time dressing up as the “Trash Wolf” and picking up as much litter as he can.

“I usually have tunes in my ears. So am listening to some good music. I get to interact with the public and I’m cleaning the neighborhood. So honestly, it’s really enjoyable,” he said.

Smith posts lots of short videos of his Trash Wolf exploits on Instagram and hopes to spread his litter fighting ideas around the world. “I literally challenge everyone to look anywhere. It’s everywhere.”
