HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Residents are hoping for some sidewalks in their neighborhood as traffic gets busier.
Gail Solivan lives in a community off of Memorial Highway between Countryway Boulevard and Double Branch Road, an area that has a lot more people coming and going lately.
“I’m just afraid someone is going to get hit one of these days,” Solivan said.
She says that road has gotten busier with subdivisions, an RV park and a preschool. But there’s no sidewalk.
“There’s a lot more traffic now,” Solivan said.
She often sees people walking or biking in the street. Even she has had to adjust how she bikes through there.
“Cars go past me. I just hope they give me enough room. It’s a little scary sometimes,” Solivan said.
She said she’s tried for years to get answers about why there is no sidewalk there.
Hillsborough County officials say there are currently no plans for one. However, they are rebuilding Memorial Highway east of that area with plans for more pedestrian amenities, such as sidewalks and crosswalks. Officials also say they’re open to other changes as traffic patterns change.
Solivan feels sidewalks would be a big help to the neighborhood.
“Sidewalks or some kind of a trail. So people have a safe place to walk,” Solivan said.
