TAMPA, Fla. — A bald eagle named Bolt will be placed at its new home at Moccasin Lake Nature Park on July 4 after four years of rehabilitation.
Bolt crashed on the MacDill Airforce Base runway in 2019 as a hatch year bird and was rescued by airmen who named the bird after their plane.
Bolt was taken to Busch Gardens for rehabilitation and is no longer a fully flighted bird.
Now 4-years-old, Tampa Bay Raptor volunteers will place the male bald eagle into an enclosure with a female bald eagle named Penelope on Tuesday.
“He has been in his bachelors’ officers’ quarters during basic training and is ready for deployment as a full-time avian ambassador,” said Barbara Walker.
Bolt is completely supported at the park through public donations, according to Tampa Bay Raptor Rescue.
The public can visit Bolt during regular hours on Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (excluding the July 4 holiday).
Volunteers are out through the week to answer questions and provide bald eagle education.
