TAMPA, Fla. — Moffitt Cancer Center has opened a new cancer screening facility in Tampa’s Channelside District.

What You Need To Know

  • In first hour of opening, 37 skin cancer screenings were done

  • In 14 of those patients, suspicious areas were discovered with required additional testing

The office is in the heart of the busy shopping district and next to Tampa’s Cruise Ship Terminal.

“If you are in the community and you make cancer screening accessible, then yes, people are more likely to get the screening and help prevent cancer,” said Jasmine Calzada, director of Nursing and Ambulatory Clinic Operations at Moffitt Cancer Center.

Calzada says in the first hour the center was opened, it conducted 37 skin cancer screenings, and in 14 of those patients, suspicious areas were discovered with required additional testing.

Moffitt says the high-traffic area in Channelside will be an easy location for people to walk in for screenings.

“We know that the cruise guests are waiting or you know kind of standing around sometimes, or even when they are here just to visit Tampa Bay, they tend to come into the space,” said Calzada. “We have a great opportunity to talk to them about cancer care and really focus on screening and prevention for all cancers.”
