HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Principals in Hillsborough County sent out an email to parents stating that AP Psychology will be taught in their schools.
This is part of a back-and-forth that has lasted for a few weeks, but now, school district leaders say that schools can teach the course now that they know it’s consistent with state law.
Just before the start of school last week, the district was switching to the Cambridge International version of the course.
School leaders had been concerned that lessons about gender identity and sexual orientation violated state law, but after a series of statements, the Florida Department of Education said that there was no issue with that portion of the course.
"After reflecting on the state's statement and receiving confirmation of college credit from the College Board, district leaders agree that offering AP Psychology, in addition to Cambridge AICE Psychology, IB Psychology, and Dual Enrollment Psychology will serve the academic needs of our students and maintain our commitment to providing a high-quality education," the email to parents read.
