TAMPA, Fla. — The Bay Area will come together in Dunedin on Saturday, to aid in Maui relief efforts.

What You Need To Know

  • The Honu Restaurant and Tiki Bar in Dunedin will host a fundraiser for Maui Saturday

  • The Music for Maui event will raise money to benefit the Maui Food Bank and Maui Humane Society

  • Restaurant owner Kimberly Platt says other businesses are also helping with the fundraiser

The Honu Restaurant and Tiki Bar, located on Grant Street, will be hosting "Music for Maui," a fundraising event to benefit both the Maui Food Bank and the Maui Humane Society.

Kimberly Platt, the restaurant’s owner and executive chef, calls Hawaii her second home. She visits both the Big Island and Maui every year with her wife and said the people and culture there are the inspiration behind her restaurant’s authentic Polynesian decor and cuisine.

Platt did not hesitate to organize the fundraiser, after hearing from loved ones who live on the fire ravished island.

“Our friends are there and they’re OK. But their friends and family are not,” Platt said. “There are still some missing and there are still some what we are now calling unaccounted for.”

Platt said other Dunedin restaurants and businesses have also stepped in to help with the fundraiser, which she calls typical of the Dunedin community.  Among others, the Scottish American Society of Dunedin donated the use of its chairs and tables, Blur Nightclub donated a tent and both Pisces Sushi and Global Bistro and House of Brewing Company have donated proceeds from drink specials to the cause.

“We are extremely grateful to all of our community partners and neighbors,” Platt said. “Everybody has been helping us with this.”

"Music for Maui" will be held at The Honu Saturday, September 8th from noon to 9pm. For information on musical acts, the silent auction and raffle, visit the restaurant’s Facebook page.
