“It’s the quiet moment before the heat of an election before the flurry of all the campaigning. We can all take a moment to embrace democracy,” Newsom said.

On the recent National Voter Registration Day, the team was set up at several campuses across Pinellas County.

Heide Davis with the League of Women Voters of St. Petersburg was among those helping students navigate the process of getting registered.

“We are making sure we are serving the community, making sure people have access to do that with us,” Davis said.

The League of Women Voters had to change tactics in helping people register to vote after a new state law took aim at third party registration groups, limiting who can help in the process and threaten hefty fines if a mistake is found in the paperwork.

The event helped the registration process get started for nearly 200 students.
