CLEARWATER, Fla. — A deadly motorcycle crash near the Pinellas side of the Courtney Campbell Causeway forced a complete shutdown off all lanes around 3 p.m. Sunday.
Clearwater Police say at least two motorcycles and one car were involved.
One motorcyclist died at the scene, and a second motorcyclist had to be air-lifted to a local hospital.
The second motorcyclist, a 26-year-old man from Valrico, died after being taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa by medical helicopter. The motorcyclist who was pronounced dead at the scene was a 51-year-old man from Tampa.
Both were traveling east at a high rate of speed when one motorcyclist slammed into the rear of an eastbound Hyundai Sonata, which was in the median lane and traveling at the speed limit.
The impact sent the Hyundai into the curb lane, where it collided with the other motorcyclist. The female driver of the Hyundai was not injured.
Officials said the crash remains under investigation.
