INVERNESS, Fla. — Some parents in Citrus County are voicing their frustration over a change in leadership on Citrus High School's football team.

What You Need To Know

  • Joshua Ross was relieved of his coaching duties at Citrus High School less than a year after being hired

  • According to some parents with students on the team, this started following an alleged fight between two players in the locker room that eventually led to Ross being "reassigned"

  • According to the school district, although Ross was relieved of his coaching duties, he's still an instructor at the school

Joshua Ross, the former head football coach at Citrus High School, was relieved of his duties less than a year into his tenure leading the Hurricanes' football program.

Many parents said they aren’t sure why, including Kelly Jones, whose son Tyler is a quarterback on the team.

As a senior, Tyler always wanted to be a quarterback and got that chance for the Hurricanes this season behind the leadership of Ross.

“He bluntly said [Ross is] the only coach that ever believed in him,” said Kelly.

She says the way Ross coached was what enticed Kelly and her son to finish his high school career at Citrus, rather than go to a different school.

His vision for the program, Kelly says, is something she quickly bought into.

“It brought this whole new dynamic to the team,” she said. “His vision at the beginning of spring was just phenomenal, and I knew if he was allowed to implement that, that this season would be amazing.

But Kelly says that implementation never was able to happen because, during the middle of Citrus’ season, Ross was “reassigned” by the district.

“He was reassigned and couldn't be at the game,” she said. “And that's all the information that we got.”

From what Kelly was able to gather, there was allegedly a fight between two players in the locker room and she believes that’s what led to his reassignment.

She says families were left in the dark until they later found out that reassignment meant Ross would no longer coach the Hurricanes.

Spectrum Bay News 9 reached out to the Citrus County school district and in a statement, officials say that while Ross was relieved of his coaching duties, he is still at the school as a teacher.

The school district did not elaborate beyond that.

Kelly says if the alleged fight was the cause, she doesn’t think it’s enough to remove Ross as a coach.

“Every time there's a fight locker room on the bus in the in the cafeteria, in the hallways, in outside the door, why isn't any of them reassigned?” Kelly asked. “I haven't heard of anybody out of the four or so fights that I know of have been reassigned. If you really want to punish somebody, you need to do it equally.”

In response, she spoke out during Citrus County School Board’s public comment period on Tuesday, voicing her frustrations over this incident while hoping things would change, or at least, get some answers for her son and the team.

“My son is at a place emotionally and mentally because of Coach Ross, so that will be my hill to die on,” Kelly said.

Citrus High School’s football team went 1-9 this season.

Ross was reassigned from the head coaching position back in October, according to the Citrus County Chronicle.
