TAMPA — Investigators with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office say one person was killed in a shooting Thursday in the 7800 block of Rideout Road, causing two nearby schools to be put under lock-in status as a precaution for nearly four hours.

Deputies say the shooting happened at about 10:40 a.m.

Once at the scene, deputies reported finding one person who was pronounced dead at the scene, and two others who had been injured in the shooting. Both were taken to Tampa General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Clair Mel Elementary School and Dowdell Middle School, which are located near the scene of the shooting, were put on lock-in status until about 2:30 p.m. Authorities said the incident is not related to the schools or any students.

School officials say a lock-in status is different from a lockdown status. During lock-ins, students are to remain in their classrooms, and common areas in schools that are closed, and classes continue as usual.

During a lockdown, students are directed to go to a safe space or hard corner in a classroom and cover windows and turn off lights.
