TAMPA, Fla. — It might not be the North Pole, but the Toys for Tots distribution center in Tampa may be just as busy.

The Marine Corps, which runs the toy drive, says donations are almost double this year compared to last year.

So far, it has received 50,000 donations.

The deadline to donate toys is Dec. 9.

Deconte Wilson, with the Marine Corps, is the coordinator for Toys for Tots in Tampa and says the drive helps bring Christmas to families that otherwise might not be able to celebrate with gift giving.

“Our purpose here is to make sure we bridge the gap between the people willing to give and those in need, because sometimes there are a lot of families who may not have otherwise received anything for their children without the Toys for Tots foundation,” said Wilson.

Toys for Tots is still seeking donations, and volunteers to help with the sorting and delivering of toys, which happens from Dec. 15 to Dec.18 in the Tampa area.
