TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. — Among the events happening Saturday for the Epiphany celebration is the Glendi.

It celebrates the cross retrievers and the community, after the religious ceremony takes place at Spring Bayou and St. Nicholas Cathedral.

What You Need To Know

Leading up to this weekend, the young dancers participating in the Glendi practiced the traditional Greek dances.

Emmanouela Kavouklis, who is 10 years old, gave us an idea of what to expect on Saturday.

"After whoever catches the cross at the bayou, they're going to come over here,” said Emmanouela. “We're going to have a nice little party to celebrate who caught the cross."

Anna Delmadoros told us she loves her dance troupe which she has been a part of since she was in kindergarten.

The dancing at the Glendi also serves as practice for another big performance for the group called the HDF.

"Which stands for Hellenic Dance festival,” said Anna. “It's really scary to me because you're competing against other people you never met and don't know how good they are."

Nerves aside, the practice will make for a perfect performance in front of a very receptive crowd at the Glendi.

The dancers and people who show up to the event can also look forward to Greek delicacies.

The traditional Greek pastry called Loukoumades, also known as honey puffs, will be offered as well as other Greek gastronomic mainstays.

Loukoumades have become a sweet treat to also celebrate Epiphany in Tarpon Springs.

Volunteers are also prepping for the crowds. It is something little Anna is also concerned about.

"It's like crazy that they can get this all set up in time," said Anna.

This year the Glendi takes place at Craig Park in the same area as Spring Bayou where the cross retrieval happens. Because Epiphany falls on a Saturday this year, preparation is top of mind for organizers and volunteers.

“One of the things we battle at the Glendi is being ready to serve thousands of people in a really short amount of time," said volunteer Luke Pappas.

The dancers and cooks are feeling good because they have been practicing. They are ready to celebrate and are getting excited about something else that is happening that day.

"I'm looking forward for who catches the cross,” said Emmanouela. “I'm very excited for that."
