"Because of the fact that I enjoyed learning English growing up, I enjoy working with my students trying to help them accomplish and be the best they can be," said Carnes, who has been teaching at Palmetto High School for 14 years.

Carnes said she loves being in the classroom with her students. She says they keep her happy and young.

“Working really hard with them trying to get them to improve and to do their best," she said. "But its just the idea of knowing that hopefully I’m helping them to be successful."

In Carnes classroom, they work on writing, grammar and reading. She also helps them adjust to high school.

“If they get off to a good start doing the right thing, making the right choices and decisions, success will be waiting on them their senior year," said Carnes.

Now that she's reached the 50-year milestone, Carnes said she's still deciding what will come next, but currently doesn't have plans to leave the classroom.
