TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa City Council will continue to consider a citywide curfew for minors under 16.

There's been a lot of back and forth about if a curfew would even be necessary or even enforceable in the city.

What You Need To Know

  • Tampa officials discussed proposed curfew during a city council meeting on Tuesday

  • Tampa City Council will vote on the issue Jan. 25

  • If passed, the ordinance would adopt a state statute that sets a curfew at 11 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, and 12 a.m. Friday through Sunday

There was a community panel Tuesday night where police, city officials and the public weighed in on the proposed curfew.

Several questions took center stage at the meeting where Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw talked about the proposed curfew.

It would be in effect for teens under the age of 16, from 11p.m. to 5 a.m. during the week and midnight to 6 a.m. on weekends.

Tampa City Council members voted four in favor and two against during the curfew’s first reading.

Bercaw said during a panel discussion Tuesday night that TPD would immediately begin a transparent training process for officers and educating the community.

The closer look at safety in Ybor City comes after a shooting that left 2 dead and 16 injured before Halloween.

Since then, the Tampa Police Department has held community forums with residents and business owners about what it is doing to help curb crimes and violence.

Brucie Boonstoppel, mother of Harrison Boonstoppel, one of the Ybor City shooting victims, said she isn’t sure a curfew would prevent future violence.

“I think us putting limits on kids — the people that are coming out late at night with guns, they’re not going to listen to that anyway,” said Brucie Boonstoppel. “So, that’s where you come into the problem. I want more in the schools.”

There would be exceptions to the curfew, including if teens were on their way to or from work.

If it passes, teens and parents would be subject to a warning on a first violation and a $50 fine on a second violation.

A second reading for the curfew is scheduled to happen Jan. 25 at the city council meeting.
