HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. — For around a year, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office has been using a new technology, Live911, that allows their deputies to respond to scenes more quickly.

What You Need To Know

  •  Live911 allows deputies to hear dispatch calls while in their patrol cars

  •  Hernando County Sheriff's Office officials said the minutes deputies save because of Live911 are making a big difference

  •  Deputy Juan Moore said the technology has allowed him to arrive at scenes faster than before

Sheriff Al Nienhuis said they started with only a few deputies using the technology, but for the last few months, the technology has been expanded to all of them.

"The minute that phone rings and it's answered by the call taker, the deputy can hear that call going down," Nienhuis said. "So things like what actually happened, how many suspects there are, what the suspects look like, what direction they're headed, and all that stuff the deputy is getting in real-time."

Juan Moore is one of the deputies using Live911.

On April 3, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office got a call from a man at a gas station in Ridge Manor who said he saw people stealing fuel from an underground tank.

Moore was in the area and was able to head toward the gas station almost immediately.

He said he arrived faster than he would have if he didn't have access to Live911.

"I would say probably like six out of 10 times, I'm there before it even hits the computer screen because of this program," Moore said.

While faster response times for deputies are a major benefit of using Live911, Moore said the technology provides something even more important.

"The biggest thing for me is you're able to hear the emotion in people's voices when they're calling," he said.
