TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa police are investigating a shooting that has left two people dead and now have a suspect in custody.
Whitney Newsome, 37, has been charged with two counts of murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and felon in possession of a firearm.
He was taken to Orient Road Jail, police said Saturday.
According to authorities, the shooting happened Friday morning near Nebraska and 26th avenues and stemmed from an argument.
In a news release, Tampa police said: "Detectives followed evidence and developed leads based on witness statements that led to Newsome being identified as the shooter. Officers worked throughout the night and were able to locate Newsome in the area of E. 25th Ave and N. 33rd St., where Tampa Police Officers took him into custody early Saturday morning."
The names of the victims haven't been released. Newsome is accused of shooting at a third person as well.
Nebraska was closed between Plymouth Street and 26th Avenue during the investigation.
