What You Need To Know

  • Marion County bus crash left 8 people dead, and 40 others injured on Tuesday

  • One man is being charged with DUI manslaughter and appeared in court on Wednesday

  • The Farmworker Association of Florida created a GoFundMe to help the victims in the accident

  • Beth-El Farmworker Ministry in Wimauma is sharing their condolences and looking to help those impacted

“It makes us think of all the other ways that people that work outdoors are exposed to and at risk for their lives,” said Teresita Matos-Post with the Beth-El Farmworker Ministry.

Every day at the ministry starts with a prayer, but Wednesday’s hit a little closer to home for the organization.

“I see my family in the faces of the people that we serve,” said Matos-Post. “As an organization that supports farm working families that’s part of the everyday stories, we hear from families who all of a sudden lose their breadwinner.”

Matos-Post says hearing about what happened left her heartbroken, feeling many farmworkers are vulnerable in their jobs.

It’s why she’s come together with faith leaders and other organizations to come up with a way to help.

They’ve started by sharing a GoFundMe created by the Farmworker Association of Florida.

But it won’t stop there. Through the work Matos-Post does with her team, she is hoping to be that support system for the community.

“We’re always available to listen to stories, to find ways of connecting people to resources,” she said.

For many farmworkers, that means teaching them about their rights when it comes to accidents on the job and creating a space where they feel safe.

Serving farmworkers of all walks of life, Matos-Post says she’ll continue praying for those involved and helping the best she can.
