TAMPA, Fla. — A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputy was seriously injured early Friday morning when a driver ran him over during a traffic stop.

It started on Bearss Avenue near Nebraska Avenue in Tampa just after midnight. According to the sheriff’s office, a driver in a black BMW fled a traffic stop. Deputy Kalin Hall attempted to pull the car over a second time on Plantation Oaks Drive. That’s when the driver rammed into Deputy Hall.

Officials say he is an 11-year veteran with the sheriff’s office and a member of the county’s K-9 team. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital with a broken leg and will undergo surgery Friday morning.

Deputies say they found the vehicle involved in the crash about a mile from where the officer was hit. The owner of the vehicle has been identified, but they are currently unsure if that person was driving the vehicle.
