TAMPA, Fla. — A Tampa native who is also a local historian recently launched a game that incorporates the city’s Black history using something we all love.

What You Need To Know

  •  The Black Tampa Historians card game was created to educate players about Tampa's Black history

  •  The game is made up of 70 cards

  • The cards are available for purchase at two local stores: Ursula’s History Shop, located at 1421 Tampa Park Plaza in Tampa, and the Black English bookstore, located at 401 E. Oak Ave., in Tampa

Ashley Morrow is the creator of the Black Tampa Historians card game. She said she wanted to educate people about the area's rich Black history using something interactive.

The game is made up of 70 cards with questions and multiple-choice answers.

“What inspired this specifically was I was at a gathering last Thanksgiving or Christmas and we were playing Taboo, and I was like, 'What if there was a game that got people just as excited about Black history in Tampa?'” she said.

Since history gets her so excited, she used what she knew would reach the most people.

“I used to be a teacher,” Morrow said. “I used to teach at Armwood High School. I remember going to school and being in school, the best way to get through to me and through to my students was through games and through interactive activities.”

She has Tampa Black history knowledge in spades.

“I’ve always been interested in Black history, but I started organizing my research in, like, 2021,” Morrow said.

Now she’s hoping others will have it too using her card game.

“A grandchild can play with their grandmother and the grandmother probably lived through a lot of this history,” she said.

Morrow said the game is her way of honoring those who had the cards stacked against them — while at the same time educating players about what they did with the hand they were dealt.
