TAMPA, Fla. — Chefs and volunteers alike took up the quest to construct the longest Cuban sandwich ever made.
Battling the elements, volunteers fought to break the record by reaching a sandwich of 360 feet. That’s the length of a football field.
The journey was not a quick one, but Rene Marquis, with the American Culinary Federation, was ready to not only break the record but help those in need.
“Tampa is the oldest Cuban sandwich in the world and now we’re going to have the largest Cuban sandwich in the world, but the best part about it is the community has come together and we’re feeding people in need,” he said.
Dr. Tom Atchinson, with New Beginnings of Tampa, said seeing so many people come together to help those in need at their facility means the world.
“It’s not just the food that will feed people but it’s the thought of it that they would think of our veterans and think of our people that are homeless to be able to give that to them and it’s very meaningful,” he said.
With the record broken at 366 feet, the rush to pack up the sandwich began.
Organizers estimate it can feed more than 750 people and they want to keep it as fresh as possible.
