Hurricane Ernesto was the fifth named storm of the 2024 hurricane season.

Ernesto formed in the western Atlantic Ocean, becoming a tropical storm on Monday, Aug. 12, and became a hurricane on Wednesday, Aug. 14.

  • Ernesto made landfall as a hurricane in Bermuda

  • It also brought impacts to the eastern Caribbean

  • It dissipated in the northern Atlantic

Ernesto moved through the eastern Caribbean, bringing strong winds, rough surf and heavy rainfall to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Later, it made landfall in Bermuda on Aug. 17, as a Category 1 hurricane.

Widespread, heavy rainfall from Ernesto brought flash flooding and mudslides across Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The storm brought rough coastal conditions as well across the eastern Caribbean.

It moved back into the western Atlantic and strengthened as it moved toward Bermuda, eventually becoming a Category 2 storm. It weakened before landfall, moving over Bermuda on Aug. 17, as a Category 1 hurricane.
