TAMPA, Fla. — The turf is in place, the athletes are ready and supporters, like Josh Levinson, can’t wait to sing the Beatles' hit, 'Here Comes the Sun' to welcome in the newest professional team, Tampa Bay Sun FC.
“The idea of a brand-new team with a brand-new league being right, you know, right here, right in the heart of the city, really exciting to have the opportunity to be on the ground floor, something like that,” Levinson said.
Levinson was born and raised in Tampa and says his family got to see sports really evolve here with the Lightning and Rays but being able to witness the start of the sun himself is what gets him psyched for this weekend’s match.
“Having the opportunity to hopefully be a part of game one and the town for the team like that be really, really cool,” Levinson.
It’s why he joined the Sun’s supporter group, the Heatwave, which coordinates chants and other fan led events through discord.
“You feel like part of the team,” Levinson said, “kind of like that collegiate atmosphere to an extent.”
And remember this kind of support is here before the team plays its first official match in the United Soccer League’s Super League.
“I was there for the preseason game last week,” Levinson said, “which is the very first look any of us had, to see everything. And we were all blown away with how impressive it looks.”
Which is surprising at face value considering their home matches will be at Blake High School.
However, if you speak with players like Ashley Orkus, goalkeeper for the Suns, she was blown away by the squad’s pitch.
“As soon as I came here, my jaw hit the floor,” Orkus said. “It's so cool. You have the river, you have Armature Works, you have the skyline. It's so cool.”
Considering this is Tampa’s first professional women’s team, Orkus knows the energy will be high on Sunday.
“This is going to be an absolute madhouse,” Orkus said. “It's going to be a huge party. And we as players are super excited to be able to leave the field knowing that everybody had a great night.”
And Levinson hopes that enthusiasm will continue for a long time as the Bay welcomes in the Sun with the lyrics of that famous song by the Beatles in their head saying, ‘It’s alright.’
The Sun’s first match against Dallas Trinity FC kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
