  • Heavy rain creates flooding in Clearwater; area saw more than 4 inches of rain on Thursday morning

In Clearwater, residents at The Standard apartments in the 2600 block of Drew Street found their parking lot flooded early Thursday.

Clearwater Police sent multiple messages through social media regarding high waters on streets in the city.

Starcrest Drive and Rainbow Drive saw high waters, as did the area near Cleveland Street, west of Belcher Road.

According to Bay News 9 Chief Meteorologist Mike Clay, the official rainfall total in Clearwater was 4.69 inches around midday.

And more rain is expected.

“There will be chances for more rain every day into next week,” said Bay News 9 meteorologist Diane Kacmarik.

Meanwhile, residents at The Standard continue to deal with flood waters Thursday afternoon.

One side of the complex’s buildings saw the bulk of the rain, with cars unable to be moved.

Resident Veronica Lugo said that as the rain started around 4 a.m., she moved her car from where the flooding was happening.

She said part of the reason for moving the car was flooding that happened during Hurricane Debby a few weeks ago.

“(In) the morning, the parking lot got flooded,” Lugo said. “So we need to walk all the way around to be able to get to the car and take my daughter to school.”

Other residents had to maneuver through knee-deep water outside their apartments.

Some also had water high enough to damage their vehicles and trickle into their apartments.
