ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Edwin Uceta has been suspended by Major League Baseball for three games after throwing at Nick Castellanos of the Philadelphia Phillies during a game Tuesday night.

Rays manager Kevin Cash was also suspended for one game, which he will serve Wednesday night in the finale of the three-game series.

The incident happened while the Phillies were scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to eventually win, 9-4.

Uceta came into the game with two runners on base and gave up a double which scored them both. After a strikeout, he allowed a single, a homer and a double before plunking Castellanos.

Both benches and bullpens emptied and ran onto the field, but no punches appeared to be thrown.

Castellanos later told reporters he had an "overwhelming sense" he was going to be hit and was critical of Uceta's actions.

There was no immediate word if Uceta planned to appeal the suspension.

The teams play again tonight at 6:40 p.m.
