HCSO Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer said this weekend two people were detained in connection with the case. As of Monday night, no arrests had been made.

PJ's mother, Bianca Cooper, says PJ was a junior at Jefferson High School in Tampa, where he was an honors student. She said he loved basketball, spending time with friends and wanted to study engineering after graduation.

"This is so senseless. He could still be here today with his family, but no - we're having to bury him at 16," said Cooper. "He could always make you laugh. He was a jokester. He loved to eat. He just, he was like, just a big ball of energy, and he's gonna be missed."

PJ's grandmother, Deborah Sampson, says she saw shortly before he went to the mall that night.

"I talked to him when he was going to his friend's house. He told me he would be at church the next day. I don't know how to feel. I don't know how to make this go away," said Sampson. "PJ was a normal 16-year-old - no drugs, no alcohol, no smoking, no games. He went to school, he went to church."

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office hasn't released details about what led up to the shooting. Cooper says PJ's friend told her he briefly left PJ and went inside the mall to get something to eat, and when he came out, PJ was lying on the ground.

"If you know anything, please speak out, because this is a void that will not be filled. There's so many people that love him," said Cooper.

Anyone with information is asked to reach out to HCSO at (813) 247-8200.
