TAMPA, Fla. — The city of Tampa has opened three locations where residents affected by Hurricane Helene can get supplies, essential services, and a hot meal.
The latest comfort station opened Thursday at the Gandy Civic Association, at 4207 W. Oklahoma Ave.
Residents can pick up supplies and get resources from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Salvation Army will provide hot meals from noon to 6 p.m.
“Anything from first aid, to water, to pampers, to deodorant and we even have lunch for them,” Tampa Fire Chief Barbara Tripp said. “If they want to come through and get some. We know the community is hurting and we’re hurting with you all.”
Permitting services are also available so residents can quickly get needed permits to continue rebuilding.
Many residents, including Sharnee Cannon, grabbed supplies and a meal before returning to work on their homes.
Cannon said her home near Port Tampa took on roughly 3 feet of water. Cannon, who cares for her two grandchildren, said they lost almost everything. She fears that her home has suffered too much damage to be repaired.
“It’s hard sometimes asking for help when you’re used to being a helper,” she said. “But I had to put my pride aside and come get some water and some food for myself and my grandkids.”
Two additional comfort stations are open at Desoto Park, located at 2617 Corrine St., and Marjorie Park, located at 97 Columbia Dr. Those sites also offer restrooms and showers.
