TAMPA, Fla. — School districts through the Bay area are evaluating their situations for resuming operations in the wake of Hurricane Milton.

Here’s a list of the latest information with Bay area districts:

HILLSBOROUGH: In a statement Monday, the school system said: "Hillsborough County Public Schools will remain closed on Tuesday, October 15, due to recovery efforts from Hurricane Milton.  

In a release, school officials said; "Despite recovery efforts, we need at least another day before we can safely reopen schools. Schools & district offices will remain closed on Tuesday, 10/15. We will continue to work closely with TECO on restoration efforts & provide an update tomorrow." 

Officials listed the status of the district campuses: 

  • Approx. 100 schools are without power 
  • More than a dozen schools still have standing water in them
  • Food deliveries for breakfast & lunch are delayed.
  • Many roads have hazards or traffic signals that are not working.

PINELLAS: In a statement Saturday, the school system said: "As much of the community and many sites across Pinellas County Schools are without power, and the Pinellas County Schools continues to host members of the community in Shelters, the district will remain closed on Monday, October 14. All sports and activities are canceled.

No decision has been made about Tuesday, October 15. The district will communicate this decision by noon on Monday, October 14, and will be based on the closure of shelters and the stability of the power grid.

District operations staff continue to repair the damage to our school sites. Once power is restored to our sites, operations staff will be able to do comprehensive repairs to ensure the health, safety, and security of our buildings."

PASCO: NEW: Pasco County Schools will remain closed on Monday due to power outages and fuel concerns.

POLK: Our team continues to work diligently to prepare for PCPS schools to reopen for our students and staff.

However, our schools must remain closed on Monday, Oct. 14, and Tuesday, Oct. 15. We expect to reopen our campuses to students on Wednesday, Oct. 16.Some PCPS district staff will begin returning to work on Monday (Oct. 14), and school-based staff, including teachers, will return on Tuesday (Oct. 15).

MANATEE: Monday, October 14, 2024 is a previously scheduled Record Day, so there will be no school for students.

Our hope is for students to return to school on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. A decision regarding a Tuesday return will be made by 5 p.m. Monday, October 14, 2024.

HERNANDO: Hernando schools will not be open Monday as it was previously scheduled. No announcement has been made about Tuesday.

CITRUS: The Citrus County School District are open on Monday, Oct. 14.

UPDATE: Due to the instructional time lost from the recent hurricanes, we will be making up the following days:

Monday, October 21st 

Monday, November 11th 

And December 20th will now be a full instructional day. 

We recognize that October 21st was originally scheduled as Fall Break, and November 11th is Veteran's Day. However, we must meet the state's instructional hour requirements for the year. Please know that we deeply value our veterans, and we plan to honor them in meaningful ways in our schools on November 11th.
