Tampa, Fla. — The United States Postal Service says it still has 17 Bay area post office locations closed as a result of damage from hurricanes Helene and Milton, but it is scrambling to resume normal operations as soon as possible.

In Town ’N Country, Karen Olsen says she relies on a P.O. Box that she hasn’t been able to access in more than three weeks.

What You Need To Know

  • The United States Postal Service says it still has 17 local post offices closed due to damage from hurricanes Helene and Milton

  • Impacted post offices are using alternate sites for mail pickup and drop off

  • USPS has not released a timeline when normal operations will resume

  • Even some areas not damaged or flooded have seen mail service delays as a result of a backlog of letters and packages

“The post office, the lobby has been out of commission since Helene. I can’t get my mail. There is no way in. I came in to try and get it and the whole lobby is full of sewage.”

The town and Town ’N Country post office has forwarded its service temporarily to the Hilldale Station on W. Hillsborough Avenue until its location can be repaired and reopened.

Aside from more than a dozen post offices being shut down, carriers are also dealing with a sizable backlog of mail that stacked up during both hurricanes.

The USPS Tampa Region did not respond to request for comment from Spectrum News, but in a statement this week, USPS says it is working hard to reopen its facilities and resume normal mail delivery, but it says “there is significant work to be done to deliver a backlog of mail and packages and reopen routes in the areas hit hardest by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The full recovery of service to the area may stretch forward for some time.”
