HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Hillsborough County Development Services is now offering residents impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton, help in the permitting process for minor repairs.

By visiting the Hillsborough County website, residents can find all the resources they need to determine if a permit, or what kind of permit, is required based on the repairs being made.

For residents who fill out a permit online, the county said they will issue immediate permits for those repairs not needing a full plan review.

If you are replacing an HVAC system, repairing electrical components or have windows, doors or hurricane shutter damage, all those repairs require a permit.

But Hillsborough County Executive Manager for Permitting and Plan Review Heather Tank said her office is getting many calls concerning jobs that don’t need a permit.

“Two main items that we are seeing a lot of damage with but do not require a permit by Hillsborough County is if you have roof damage and the repair is going to be less than 500 square feet. A permit is not required for that work. Also, for dry wall, removal and replacement, a permit is not required,” Tank said.

The county said it is also allowing for extensions for anyone holding an expired or soon expiring building permit.
