HAINES CITY, FLA -- Latoya King has always called Polk County home.

For the past eight years, she’s been teaching there at East Side Elementary. Last year she taught first graders and this year she moved up with them to second grade.

“It’s very rewarding. Growing up I saw my parents who were very involved in the community, still involved in the community. They work with adults and children so it’s kind of been instilled in me,” said King.

Each school year she starts out by building relationships with her students and that helps them be successful in her class.

“I honestly consider them my kids. The same type of relationship that I have with my children where I push them, motivate them, want the best for them. I do the same for my students here,” said King.

King teaches math and science. Her lessons expand beyond those subjects to help prepare her students for the future.

“I teach them that we’re learning math, however this is something that you see in your everyday when you’re outside of the classroom. So I just feel like they see that I care, they know that I love them,” said King.

Her favorite part about her job is watching her students help their peers with the information she’s taught them.

“I feel like I was called to teach and it’s just instilling the knowledge that I have learned in my students. And of course learning is something you never stop doing,” said King.
