ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. — Some St. Pete Beach residents have been waiting for months to get approval for permits to fix their homes after Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

Doug Engle has lived in his St. Pete Beach home for the past four and a half years, but he has been living out of a trailer in his driveway since storm surge from Helene destroyed the inside of his home.

Since then, it has sat gutted and waiting to be fixed. However, trying to get permits to make that happen has been a long and frustrating process for Engle.

“They are taking months to get permits. I haven’t even picked a contractor yet, but they are telling me it's going to be two months to get a permit to start working,” Engle said.

So, in the meantime, all he can do is wait. And he is sick of waiting.

“You have to way too much red tape. Get rid of the red tape and start rubber stamping permits and move this along,” Engle said.

He says that it’s the same story for many on his block who are hearing anywhere from two to four months to get the proper permits.

Spectrum News reached out to St. Pete Beach city officials but hasn't heard back yet.
