CLEARWATER, Fla. — It’s the season of giving, and one Bay area organization is focusing on the elderly.

Better Living For Seniors in Pinellas County runs a volunteer effort called Silver Santas. And this year, volunteers delivered hundreds of gift bags to those in assisted living facilities who were identified by staff as vulnerable to isolation this time of year.

“We are looking for people who have nobody and nothing,” said Bob Dorian, chairman for Silver Santas. “We want them to know the community has not forgotten about them during the holidays.”

Dorian said Silver Santas fulfilled wishlists for 1700 seniors this year.

“Think ‘Toys for Tots,’ but it’s not toys these folks need,” said Dorian. “They want basic necessities — a jacket, a bathrobe, some slippers.”

The warehouse space used by the group belongs to the organization Home Instead, which runs its own holiday drive called Be a Santa to a Senior, which provides gifts to residents in skilled nursing facilities.
