“Caleb, we love you. Caleb, we love you,” friends of Caleb Rijios chanted.
Police say he was stabbed in the chest on Friday at East 138 St. and Third Avenue in the Bronx. He was pronounced dead in Lincoln Hospital.
Investigators called it a random attack.
“I started crying like I never expected this to happen,” Kamille Dirton, a friend of Rijios, said at the commemoration.
They volunteered together for the Bronx Youth Empowerment Program — an effort that helps kids better their community by giving back.
“He was somebody people wished they could be. He was smart [and] intelligent, with a smile that would light up the whole world,” Dirton said.
The Bronx Youth Empowerment Program, which is run by former City Councilmember Andy King, held this commemoration for the teenager.
“It’s unacceptable for people to be killed, kids being killed,” King said.
Police arrested 28-year-old Waldo Meijia on Saturday in connection to Caleb’s death. According to officials, the charges include murder and manslaughter.
Officials say he had several prior charges including other stabbings and a history of mental health interactions with the NYPD.
The solemn gathering ended with a prayer.
“God, wrap your arms around the community,” Pastor Franklin Williamson said.
People at the commemoration said Rijios loved playing football at his High School and he was the kind of person people gravitated toward — a life lost too soon.
