ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Rising egg prices are not just affecting people at home, but also restaurants in the Tampa Bay area.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the price for a dozen eggs in May 2024 was $2.70 for a dozen eggs. In December, the price rose to $4.15.
That increase is largely due to a rise in bird flu cases.
General manager at St. Petersburg’s The Frog Pond Carlene Mackert says for a restaurant that uses eggs in nearly every menu item and that goes through hundreds every week: it’s a big deal.
“It was $0.33 when I started and that was about 4 or 5 months ago,” she said. “Now it is $0.53 per egg.”
With the price change, they’ve had to make changes by adding a warning to the front of their menus about their prices.
“Had to put disclaimers on the front because of food costs,” Mackert said. “Certain menu items have increased in price.”
Mackert said most menu items have increased in cost between $0.75 and $1.00.
For now, Mackert said everyone at the Frog Pond is doing their best to give their customers the best food and experience they can.
