ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — This weekend, an estimated 200,000 people are packing into St. Pete to get a peek of the Firestone Grand Prix.

What You Need To Know

  • Positive Impact St. Pete partnered with the Firestone Grand Prix

  • This is the second year of the partnership

  • Last year, they were able to provide food to around 700 families

With so many people, there’s a lot of food that’s gonna be cooked.

To make sure none of that food goes to waste, a local nonprofit, Positive Impact St. Pete, is teaming up with the Grand Prix.

“It’s amazing the amount of food that’s left over that we are able to get to the families who need it the most and put it on their dinner tables rather than it going to waste,” Executive Director of Positive Impact St. Pete Karen Rae said.

Rae said last year they were able to give food to around 700 families, totaling roughly 3,000 people.

This is the second year they’re working with the Grand Prix.

Volunteers with the organization will stop by kitchens like the one of Andretti Executive Chef Justin York and see if there’s anything they would otherwise throw away.

York is thrilled there’s an organization like this in St. Pete because as a chef, few things are as painful as good food going to waste.

“It hurts because I know there’s someone somewhere that’s hungry and or just the fact of the money value of what we’re putting out,” he said. “I would rather see it go to someone’s house, to someone’s belly versus a trash can.”
