DELAND, Fla. — A Volusia County theater is kicking off its season in a way it has never done before. The cast is stoked about inclusion, diversity and flat-out entertainment. Here are five things you need to know about Ain't Misbehavin'.
1. Ain't Misbehavin' debuts this weekend at the Athens Theatre in DeLand.
2. The musical is a tribute to the Black musicians of the 1920s and 30s who were part of the Harlem Renaissance, an era of cultural awareness and ethnic pride.
3. The musical revue takes its title from the 1929 Fats Waller song.
4. Joshian Morales, who hails from Disney, is directing. “It's told through all-Black artists on stage and I think that's really important right now,” he told us during rehearsal. “It should be at the forefront of anyone who is a storyteller to make sure that we are advocating and lifting voices that are regularly underrepresented.”
5. The show stars six Black performers.
“Just 100 years ago, Fats Waller, in New York City — his music was incredibly famous at that time,” artistic director Craig Uppercue said. “The most impressive part of this show is the celebration of that music, the celebration of dance, the celebration of black voices.”
Ain't Misbehavin' runs through Aug. 8
