Macy McClintock’s living proof, good things come to those who are good.

“Macy’s heart is absolutely everybody else first,” Macy’s mother Maggie said.

That’s what made the Foot Locker scholarship surprise so much sweeter.

“I’m still pretty shocked. This was a big day for us,” Macy McClintock said. “We had three girls signing from the flag football team to go play sports in college, which is a huge deal. It’s great to see our sport grow. So I was so excited to come in support them and then the tables turned.”

A $20,000 college scholarship, one of only 20 presented nationwide, will go a long way to help Macy when she heads off to George Washington University to study journalism. That it went to a flag football player meant more to the Knights starting quarterback than the monetary amount.

“I understand that I don’t play basketball or softball or a national sport that anyone knows about,” Macy said. “But flag football’s a huge deal. This is how much work we do. It’s something that should be taken seriously. Just to now have this sport on a national scale like that, that’s something that I’m really proud of.”

Flag football is one of Macy’s many endeavors. The International Baccalaureate student belongs to 11 clubs at Robinson, is president of three, owns her own non-profit that helps with literacy and holds down three part-time jobs.

“The one thing about Macy is she does it,” Maggie McClintock said. “She doesn’t talk about it, she does it.”

“The humbleness that she has and the unassumingness that she has, makes her an even more deserving recipient,” Robinson flag football head coach Joshua Saunders said.

Soon after Macy got the surprise of her life, she hit the practice field. The Knights flag football team is vying for its fourth-consecutive state championship. Macy’s ended every one of her flag football seasons at Robinson with a state title. Very appropriate for a winner.

“I think she is going to make a difference,” Maggie said. “I truly believe Macy’s going to make a difference in our future and that gives me great hope for what’s ahead.”
