LARGO, Fla. - At The Basketball Warehouse in Largo, the grind never stops.
On Tuesday nights from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., this is where you’ll find some of the best basketball players the Bay Area has to offer.
But these aren’t your typical pickup games. These runs are reserved for the best of the best.
"It’s invite only," said Basketball Warehouse Director Allen Williams. "We try to get the best talent in here and keep the guys who can really play on the floor."
"A lot of guys wanna come in and look cool and say they’ve been here for the runs. We don’t want those guys. We wanna give people an opportunity," said Assistant Director AJ Williams.
There’s a wide range of talent on court. In any given game you can see high school players, Division I hoopers and even a few professionals go toe to toe against each other.
"It’s very competitive," said Lakewood alum and NBA G League guard Jacobi Boykins. "Everyone’s trying to stay on the court cause you don’t know when you might get back on."
"It’s also well respected here," said Gibbs alum Shaq Speights. "You play somewhere else there might be arguments going on. Out here it’s a good time, a lot of old friends."
The pickup games started about two months ago.
I started to get to know guys like Jake Perper and Andrew who does Uncle Drew Productions and we wanted to do something for the community," said AJ Williams. "We wanted to give the local guys a spot where they could play and the high schoolers an opportunity to play against some of the better players in the county."
"I was just thinking we need to give the high school kids some love and get them to play against some real competition, some pros and some college guys. And allen and aj have done a good job of putting a list together and getting some good guys out here," said Prep Hoops Florida Lead Scout Jake Perper.
It can be a little intimidating at first for some of the younger guys but it’s not everyday these kids get the chance to play against top tier talent like this.
"It’s high level competition, it’s fun," said Calvary Christian freshman guard Tristan Gross. "It’s kinda tough for us since we’re so young but it’s fun to get in work against older people."
"Very beneficial cause when we go back and play our age it’ll be easier cause we learn from these older guys," said Lake Wales junior guard Walter Clayton Jr. "They’ve been overseas, they’ve been around everywhere."
"We used to have something like this at Lake Vista," said Boca Ciega grad and NBA G League guard Speedy Smith. "We used to play against Mike Morrison and those final four teams from Lakewood High School so now it’s my turn to give those runs to other guys."
Competition breeds success.
That saying certainly holds true at The Basketball Warehouse.
