TAMPA, Fla. – The following is an interview between Spectrum Sports 360 reporter Chris Torello and USF Assistant AD Jeremy Lees. The two discuss the brand new, light-weight USF Football uniforms.
- Adidas presented USF with the opportunity to be the only team in the country to wear the "WVN A1" football uniform.
- This uniform is the lightest in college football.
- USF has announced three jerseys (so far, wink wink) for this season – green (home), white (away) and black SoFlo.
Chris Torello: I am here with the Assistant Athletic Director for Equipment Operations, Jeremy Lees. Thank you for joining us, I appreciate it. You are a busy guy this time of year. Fans want to know about the new jerseys that USF Football will be wearing this season. They were debuted on twitter. What has been the reaction from players and everyone at USF?
Jeremy Lees: “I think, as a whole, very positive. The big aspect of it is the weight of the uniform. Obviously, we have the flash, we have the appeal, and it is very traditional, which speaks to our brand as a whole.
Chris Torello: “You mentioned that when it comes to formulating the uniform, take us inside as much as you can with the info and when you start developing that new concept and how long does it take; how many rough drafts does it go through?”
Jeremy Lees: “We were designing our first initial uniforms; we put these in the hopper real quick. So, we knew about them long before we debuted them. Adidas has their designers, we have our philosophy and we work together with our brand, their brand, and tie it together.”
Chris Torello: “Take me through kind of this light-weight aspect of it.”
Jeremy Lees: “So W-V-N means woven. A1 uniform is brand new. We are the only team in the country, 1st team and only team in the country, to debut it. The overall weight of this uniform – pant and top combined – is less than the pant of the old uniform from last year.”
Chris Torello: “Combined?”
Jeremy Lees: “Yes.”
Chris Torello: “Wow.”
Jeremy Lees: “Overall I think the fit is great, there are some tricks inside the shoulders to keep the jerseys on the pads better. You have the breathability inside the seams that allows – you know this material may seem closed off, but this material is so light, moisture-wicking that you want in a performance fabric, it breathes.”
Chris Torello: “The one thing I saw fans asking on social media is if there is a possibility for a different helmet?”
Jeremy Lees: “The one thing I will say is that I will never divulge anything fully but we always have stuff in our back pocket.”
Chris Torello: “Aw, man, come on. Alright, fine, I tried, I tried. I also know fans are asking if this new jersey will be the jersey in 2020, 2021. Is there potential for these jerseys to have a little bit of a shelf life?”
Jeremy Lees: “What I would say is typically when you are looking at football uniforms, in particular, you’re looking at a good range of three to four years. Obviously you have your traditional schools where it just sticks. So, we’ll see. We will debut it this year and take each year as it comes. If Adidas comes to us and says “hey we want to look at this and we want you to look at it” and when we’re good with it from our brand and it matches with what we are trying to do then you never know.”
Chris Torello: “You may have already spoken with Adidas about next year. You never know.”
Jeremy Lees: “You never know.”
Chris Torello: “Thanks for what you could share, Jeremy, I really appreciate it.”
