TAMPA, Fla. – USF Fan Fest is an annual tradition that Bulls fans are sure to mark down on their calendar.

This year is especially true.

There is a renewed sense of hope and purpose thanks to offseason changes, a new offensive coordinator, and reinforcements in the form of transfers.

As the 2019 USF football team made its way on to the floor of the Yuengling Center one fan screamed “Finally!” Not because the curtain had finally been pulled back to reveal the team – it was because it meant 2018 was officially behind everyone.

Fans were able to line up for photos and autographs. The two most popular signatures were quarterback Blake Barnett and tight end Mitchell Wilcox (Tarpon Springs). Both could easily be playing on Sundays come next fall. I asked them what it’s like signing for the fans.

“I want to make sure the B’s looked good,” said Barnett, who is more comfortable heading into his second season with the Bulls after transferring in from Arizona State. “And then I just want it to look at legible as possible while doing it fast.”

“I think the ‘Mitchell’ looks the same every time,” said Wilcox, who opted to stay for his senior season after new offensive coordinator Kerwin Bell was brought in by head coach Charlie Strong. “The ‘Wilcox’ though, that’s iffy.” Wilcox will have plenty of time to practice. He is considered one of the best tight end prospects for the 2020 NFL Draft.

It was an NFL team that helped Blake Barnett realize how much it means for an athlete – pro or college – to take the time for young fans.

“We used to go to the Chargers training camp all the time,” said Barnett, who is now married with a young son. “Some of the guys wouldn’t stop to sign, but other players gave you all the time. That really stuck with me.”

“I just want to be as real and genuine and thanks these fans – the young fans really – for coming out and supporting us.”

The ink has dried and the all the new fridge magnets have been handed out. Now it’s time for the optimism from Fan Fest to carry over to the field.

USF welcomes in Wisconsin on Friday, August 30 for a primetime matchup at Raymond James Stadium.
