Wiregrass Ranch Head Coach Mark Kantor knew this season would be a challenge. For just the second time in his 26 years as a football coach, Kantor had to start a sophomore quarterback.

Rocco Becht is just a sophomore and he was given the starting nod after last years starting quarterback transfered before the start of the season.

"I really didn’t know what to think, because I just thought I was going to have a year to play in and get to learn and then that happened and I got put into the starting job".

With just one season of JV experience, Rocco found himself starting for a Bulls team coming off three consecutive playoff appearances.

"I felt like I had a little pressure because there are seniors on this team that I’m trying to make them have another winning season".

The Bulls won their first 5 games to start the season with Rocco tossing 13 touchdowns as he started to settle in to his new role, it was the perfect start to his varsity career.

Rocco comes from a football family, his dad Anthony played 11 seasons in the NFL, three of them in Tampa and the former tight end appreciates what his son is trying to do.

"I didn’t get to play my sophomore year of high school, I wasn’t good enough to get on the field, I had to wait my turn and he’s doing something I didn’t get to do.

Despite a career in broadcasting now that keep dad on the road calling college and pro games, the two still get time to talk each and every week about the weeks games. Coach Kantor feels that really helps speed up his young quarterbacks learning process.

"The knowledge that his dad brings, understanding that you gotta watch film you gotta take notes, that’s one of the things a lot of young people don’t understand and that’s what he has given to Rocco".

It hasn’t all been easy for Rocco Becht, a 48-to-3 loss to last years state runner up Armwood in week six served as a wakeup call, but it’s what he has learned this year that makes the future look bright at Wiregrass Ranch.

"This year it was all a learning year for me but now that I’m put in the position it makes me even learn more when I’m on the field doing all the plays so as these next years go on I’ll just get to help the kids below me that came up as freshman and help them succeeded on varsity".

At 7-2, the Bulls don't know if they will make the playoffs, they need a little help to make it back to the post season for the fourth straight year, what they do know, they have found their quarterback for the next three years.
