TAMPA, FL - If there is one shirt Bucs fans are looking to get this Super Bowl week…One company has you covered.
It’s the “Defend the Bay” shirt. It has become a rallying cry for Bucs faithful. That includes Portland Timber FC Goalkeeper and Clearwater native Jeff Attinella.
"I do play sports professionally, but for me I am always a fan, right," said Attinella, who also played at USF and for the Rowdies. "I am a fan of this city and a fan of the teams in this city."
Attinella’s father-in-law owns Smack Apparel – a locally run company for 22 years. When the Bucs won the NFC Title in Green Bay, the company knew a shirt had to be made. First they needed a name.
"One of our co-workers, Chris, came up with Defend the Bay," said Smack Apparel CMO Derek Miller.
Then it was a matter of making sure the design would be one Bucs fans want.
"We were able to incorporate the stadium and some other pirate elements to it," said Miller. "Gives it a narrative, which is always awesome when your t-shirts have a story behind it.
This isn’t just a shirt to represent the Bucs. It’s for the entire Bay Area.
"Whenever Tampa teams have success we love to do shirts for the area that represent the soul of Tampa," said Attinella. "I’m just a fan of making sure that Tampa is out there in the world a little bit because I think the city is so special and it’s done a lot for me."
Orders are coming in from all over the area, and even the country. When the long hours get to the team as Smack Apparel, they keep on grinding. They know this shirt is more than just something you wear.
"It just gives you a little bit more excitement and incentive to be doing your job," said Miller.
As for who will do their job the best this Sunday, Attinella said he won’t be making any predictions. But he knows he’ll be wearing his shirt for his city watching his team and his QB.
"I’m happy that they’re there and now you just gotta trust the GOAT (Tom Brady)," said Attinella.
Smack Apparel is getting these shirts out via mail usually by same-day shipping. The best way to order is through smackapparel.com. And the great thing is that a portion of the sales of these will go to at least one local charity.
