Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans had to stay up late Thursday night to see which player the Super Bowl champions would take in the first round of the NFL Draft.
What You Need To Know
- Bucs select defensive end Joe Tryon of Washington
- Tryon says he "can't wait to get started"
- He'll have to fight for playing time on the team's loaded defense
The choice? Joe Tryon, a defensive end from Washington.
“We had great reports coming out before we met with him on his personality and the fact that he's a great teammate,” said Bucs General Manager Jason Licht. “He wants to give 100 percent effort at all times. He's dedicated himself to football and to be the best that he can.”
For Tryon, it was quite a 22nd birthday.
“I'm really blessed and I can't wait to get started,” he said.
Tampa Bay had the last pick of the first round because the team won the Super Bowl. Tryon knows he is joining a stacked roster.
“Just being around greatness, it really motivates me,” Tryon said. “So I just can't wait to get in that locker room and soak it all in, get started. We've got games to win and I'm just looking to help the part.”
Tryon joins a defensive unit coming off one of the most impressive performances in Super Bowl history. The Bucs kept the Kansas City Chiefs, the league's No. 1 offense, out of the end zone.
The edge rusher will have to fight for playing time since Tampa Bay has retained all 22 starters from the Super Bowl championship team. It's a battle he's willing to wage.
“My strengths are getting after the quarterback,” Tryon said. “I can play the run, first, second down then get after the quarterback on third down. So my versatility with the scheme, it doesn't really matter, I fit any scheme. Drop me in coverage or anything. I'm an all-around player.”
