Former Rays outfielder Gerald Williams reportedly passed away Tuesday at just 55 years old, following a battle with cancer.
Williams, a Tampa resident, played for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays from 2000 to 2001, following stints with the New York Yankees, Milwaukee Brewers and Atlanta Braves. He would go on to return to the Yankees and then play with the Florida Marlins and the New York Mets.
Williams was best friends with baseball legend and former Yankees player Derek Jeter, who seemingly confirmed Williams' passing to the Players' Tribune.
“Gerald Williams passed away this morning after a battle with cancer. To my teammate and one of my best friends in the world, rest in peace, my brother. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Liliana, and their whole family.” —Derek Jeter pic.twitter.com/mVoaZ8BPrP
