Odessa, Fla. – For Don Coffey, there’s something liberating about riding a bicycle. “It’s really remarkably free. You’re flying down the trail and it’s just a wonderful experience. “
The 67-year-old retiree typically rides around four to five days a week and will do about 10-40 miles a day. While those may seem like long distances, they pale in comparison to some of the treks Don has made over the years.
“So me and my buddy Steve did one (cross-country trip) a few years ago from St. Augustine all the way to San Diego,” said Coffey.
Later this month, Don will embark on another cross-country journey. Only this time, he’ll be going through the northern states and will be joined by his wife Susan and their daughter Elizabeth.
“We’re leaving from Provincetown, Massachusetts, which is the end of Cape Cod. And we’re going to ride across New York, across Ohio, up through Michigan and then basically straight west across Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana and ending near Seattle.”
Don has spent hundreds of hours mapping out his 3,700 plus mile journey.
“The toughest part is figuring out where you’re going to spend the night. We’ve solved that problem because we bought a motorhome so Susan will drive the motorhome.”
“I love being a part of it,” said Susan. “I was part of it before by helping them find a place to stay every night and I’ll be part of this time around trying to find a place to park that camper every night too.”
Don is also using this trip as way to raise money for The Wounded Warrior Project. A cause near and dear to his heart as their son Tom served as an Army Ranger.
“It’s great to have a chance to give something back especially young men and women who commit themselves to this country,” said Coffey.
Only fitting that Don Coffey help those who fight for our freedom by doing something that makes him feel free.
