Barron Mamiya joined some elite company over the weekend.
The Haleiwa native became just the sixth person to win consecutive titles at the Lexus Pipe Pro on Saturday as he edged Italy’s Leonardo Fioravanti via tiebreaker as both posted elite marks of 17.97 in the 4-to-6-foot waves.
Mamiya had the higher single-wave score of 9.80 as the deciding factor in the men’s final.
"I really can't believe it happened again, I'm super grateful.” Mamiya told the WSL. “Winning it, you know, cool, right on, you did it, it's a big deal. But trying to do back-to-back, I feel like that cements you as one of the best ever out here. That was my goal going to this comp and I did it.”
Mamiya, Andy Irons and Rory Russell are the only Hawaii natives to repeat in the event that dates back to 1976. Until Saturday, Irons was the last of anybody to do it in 2005 and 2006.
He advanced through the ranks by combining high wave scores from Pipeline and Backdoor, posting an 18.90 in the semifinals against Italo Ferreira.
In the final against Italy’s Fioravanti, Mamiya used the same strategy to post scores of 8.17 at Pipe and 9.80 at Backdoor in the first six minutes of the 35-minute competition window.
Fioravanti started slow but came on strong with scores of 8.83 and then 9.10, just shy of the 9.11 he needed to win.
“Leo, that was an insane Final,” Mamiya said. “For you to come back like that was crazy. But, you know, just yesterday and the heat with John (John Florence, a 17.97-17.06 battle in the round of 16). Everything was just pretty crazy.”
Mamiya, 25, has won all three of his career WSL Championship Tour titles on Oahu’s North Shore. He won the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach in 2022.
On the women’s side, Tyler Wright of Australia defeated Caitlin Simmers of California, 7.70 to 3.94 in the final.
Hawaii’s Gabriela Bryan, Bettylou Sakura Johnson and Moana Jones Wong were eliminated in the round of 16.
