When drivers routinely disregarded a "no turns" sign for two years in Hernando County, residents reached out to our Real Time Traffic Expert for help.

What You Need To Know

The problem intersection is Barclay at Cortez. There are three lanes northbound, but only one for southbound traffic. It’s in the single southbound lane where drivers continue to make that illegal left turn, stopping everyone behind them.

"There's been a lot of accidents going into the gas station,” said resident Dennis Bormann. “People getting t-boned and the possibility of being rear-ended because people still can't see around the corner to see all the cars backed up waiting for someone to do an illegal turn."

It's not as though the turn is onto another street or into a major shopping plaza. It’s to a gas station and a convenience store - basically something you can find on most any corner along Cortez Road.

"I've sent in two emails and they respond that they'll forward it to the proper department,” Bormann said.

Dennis is not the only person asking the county to enforce the sign they put up.

There's also an online petition on change.org with about 50 signatures to get public awareness of the problem.

It's hard for anyone to say they don't see the sign. It has been placed at the very spot where the turn happens. And the crash history at the spot is extensive.

Spectrum Bay News 9’s Chuck Henson has spoken to Michael Terry, public information officer for the Sheriff's Office in Hernando County, and they are aware of the problem.

Enforcement at the location is tough because of limited staff and resources, however, Terry says the sheriff's office made an educational video to help inform the public of the issue.

Chuck also inquired about the possibility of installing bollards along the lane striping to create a physical barrier.
