A raw weather day is unfolding around the region today as precipitation settles into a cold airmass. Some sleet pellets or snowflakes remain possible in some areas today, but as the atmosphere saturates, precipitation will become either rain or freezing rain, depending on surface temperatures.
Remember, freezing rain will look just like rain as it falls. However, it freezes and forms a glaze of ice on surfaces.
For the Charlotte metro, this will be a cold, soaking rain today into tonight. Another wave of rain will then move through tomorrow into tomorrow night and Thursday morning.
In the mountains above 2,500’ or so and into the foothills and escarpment region, freezing rain is likely to continue into tonight.
As mentioned above, more rain is on the way tomorrow into Thursday morning. I still expect widespread rain amounts in the 1-3” range, but some higher totals are definitely possible, especially in the western mountains and the escarpment region.
